Post Traumatic Stress Disorder / Panic Disorder

~ When Trauma Leaves a Lasting Mark

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating condition caused by exposure to an extreme traumatic event or prolonged stress. The experience that caused PTSD may feel like a permanent scar on the brain that doesn't heal on its own. PTSD can follow any event in which a person felt intense fear, helplessness, or horror.

~ Panic Disorder

Panic Disorder involves recurrent, unexpected panic attacks — sudden surges of intense fear that peak within minutes, with physical symptoms such as heart pounding, shortness of breath, dizziness, and fear of losing control or dying. Between attacks, people with Panic Disorder often develop persistent worry about future attacks and may avoid situations associated with panic.

~ Common PTSD Symptoms

Re-experiencing:

  • Flashbacks — reliving the traumatic event as if it were happening again
  • Nightmares and disturbing dreams related to the trauma
  • Intense distress when exposed to reminders of the event

Avoidance and Numbing:

  • Avoiding thoughts, feelings, or reminders associated with the trauma
  • Emotional numbness, detachment, or loss of interest in activities

Hyperarousal:

  • Hypervigilance — being constantly on guard for danger
  • Difficulty sleeping, concentrating, or relaxing
  • Exaggerated startle response and irritability

~ Treatment Outcome

PTSD and Panic Disorder are both highly treatable with evidence-based approaches. For PTSD, Trauma-Focused CBT, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and Prolonged Exposure Therapy are highly effective. For Panic Disorder, CBT with interoceptive exposure produces excellent results. Dr. Henry Srednicki also specializes in Betrayal Trauma recovery.
